A day Red Sox fans have waited for had finally come true last night when the organization's top pitching prospect Brayan Bello made his debut. In a spot start due to a pushback on Michael Wacha's schedule the Sox recalled the fast-rising prospect for a Wednesday night start against the Tampa Bay Rays
Final Stat line 7/7 v. Rays: 4.0 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 SO, 3 BB
That's certainly not the prettiest line to put up in your Fenway debut, but we've seen it before. Fellow Sox prospect Josh Winkowski had a similarly rough debut because he came out amped up and trying to do too much. Here's his stat line:
Winkowski Debut Stat line 5/28 v. Orioles: 3.0 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 4 SO, 3 BB
See the similarities? Bello's start felt and looked exactly like that. He was known for working fast in the minors, but it felt rushed last night. He struggled to locate his sinker and his changeup wasn't moving like it did in Worcester this year. Everything about last night pointed to Bello pushing the pace too much and leading to mistakes.
He never truly settled in but that doesn't mean the start was all bad. His two-seam sinker was consistent and had good speed at roughly 96 mph on average. The changeup stayed right around 89 mph so there was still an offset to play off of. On top of all this, Bello never seemed like the start got to him. For a guy who had a meteoric rise from Double-A to starting against a pretty good Rays team, it wasn't all bad. Bello likely will get another start or two this season and hopefully get to show a little more of what we saw with the Woo Sox at the next level.
